At The Choice Group, we are dedicated to fostering the talents of individuals through tailored employment programs. Vincent Murray from our Hampton Roads team shares the remarkable work of Xavion Simon, who has thrived through Project SEARCH and Supported Employment.

Xavion began as an intern with Project SEARCH in April 2023. His exceptional performance during the internship led to a job offer from Sentara's Environmental Service Department. Since starting in this position, Xavion has demonstrated incredible dedication in his role.

Xavion's attention to detail, effective communication, teamwork, and time management skills have made him highly proficient in his duties. These strengths have enabled him to excel in tasks such as cleaning, mopping, and sanitizing various hospital areas, including bathrooms, windows, walls, and furniture. His thoroughness and reliability have made him a valued team member.

One of the initial challenges Xavion faced was his reaction to constructive criticism and mistakes. He viewed them as failures rather than learning opportunities. With guidance and support, Xavion has learned that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. Being awarded Employee of the Month reinforced this lesson, showing him that excellence can coexist with imperfection.

Xavion has earned several accolades in his role, including Perfect Attendance and Employee of the Month. He has also taken on the role of Mentor for Project SEARCH, helping to train new interns. His responsibilities encompass a wide range of cleaning tasks, ensuring a hygienic environment throughout the hospital.

Vincent and the team at The Choice Group continue to support Xavion with Follow Along check-ins and emotional support. They also provide annual required trainings to keep him updated with his job responsibilities. This ongoing support has helped Xavion become more comfortable and confident in his work environment.

Xavion's growth extends beyond his professional achievements. He now independently navigates the hospital and has built strong relationships with many employees. His passion for running, bowling, and participating in the Special Olympics, along with his love for traveling and fashion, add to his multi-faceted personality.

Xavion Simon's story is a testament to Project SEARCH and Supported Employment the impact of resilience, dedication, and the right guidance in achieving personal and professional success. We hope you continue to be as proud of your work as we are, Xavion!

Daylin Wilkins: The Compassion Quick-Thinker

At The Choice Group, we take pride in supporting our clients in finding purposeful employment, enabling them to lead full and enriching lives. One such story comes from Billy Kraus, who has been working with Daylin Wilkins in the Hampton Roads area. Known for his caring nature, Daylin exemplified this quality in May when, while completing tasks on a worksite, he noticed a woman struggling to help an injured bird near the water. Without hesitation, he approached her and used his work vest to safely wrap the bird and assist in its rescue. This act of kindness did not go unnoticed. Military personnel arrived shortly after to continue caring for the bird and commended Daylin for his assistance. A Brother and Sister Team Find Independence with Supported Employment

Crystal and Steven MacArthur are the typical brother and sister: they enjoy watching football with their mom, attending their church, and spending time with their family, dog, and friends.  Despite some sibling eye-rolling, they look out for each other.  They also enjoy working.  When looking for part-time positions, they wanted an employer where they could stay long-term.  Crystal became a dishwasher for a staffing company at a Virginia university.  She initially worked in the Annex, a smaller cafeteria off campus.  She hand-washed dishes and eventually learned to use the automatic machine.  Because Crystal has a visual impairment, Crystal’s co-workers always looked out for her, letting her know when the floor was wet or if there were crates that might get in her way.  She became part of the team, discussing sports games and weekend plans while keeping up with the breakfast and lunch rush.  When the Annex closed and Crystal faced moving to the larger cafeteria on campus, she wa

For Richard Corliss, his journey towards meaningful employment has been nothing short of remarkable, thanks to the unwavering support of Rita Dee, his dedicated counselor at The Choice Group. Corliss, a valued member of our program, found employment in the Child Nutrition Services Department of the local school system six years ago. Since 2018, Rita Dee has been by his side, guiding him through each step of his employment journey. One of the first decisions Rita and Richard made together was pinpointing the ideal job for him.
