Building Confidence, Skills, and Independence: Dexter’s Journey
By: Billy Kraus, Employment Counselor
Service Area: Virtual PEERS courses throughout Virginia
When I first began working with Dexter in December 2024, he was a bright, kind, and creative young man with a goal that so many of our students share. He wanted meaningful work, real independence, and a chance to contribute in a workplace where he could thrive. What he needed most was support building his confidence and strengthening his communication skills so he could feel prepared stepping into competitive employment.
Through several months of Pre-Employment Transition Services and Situational Assessments, we were able to better understand Dexter’s strengths, interests, and needs. From there, he participated in our PEERS Social Skills course. This turned out to be a truly pivotal experience for him. During the program, Dexter practiced social awareness, communication strategies, and real world interaction skills. Over time, I watched him gain confidence, find his voice, and begin to truly believe in what he could contribute.
Dexter is naturally kind, thoughtful, and incredibly creative. After PEERS, he was able to let those strengths shine. He became more comfortable engaging with others and developed the tools he needed to successfully navigate work interactions. Shortly after completing the course, Dexter secured a position as a Service Clerk in his community.
In his role, Dexter bags groceries, assists customers, and helps carry items when needed. What stands out most is not his job description, but how he does his work. He is often complimented for his friendly attitude, patience, and helpful nature. Customers notice him. His team notices him. Most importantly, Dexter notices his own growth.
He has now met stability standards in his position and continues in Follow Along Services to ensure he has ongoing support as he continues to succeed. His confidence has grown tremendously, his communication skills are stronger, and he approaches work with pride and positivity.
Outside of work, Dexter loves music, especially Michael Jackson, and he has a clever curiosity that makes learning new things exciting for him. That same love for learning helped him thrive throughout this journey.
Dexter’s story is a meaningful reminder of what happens when opportunity, support, and personal determination come together. With the right tools and encouragement, students like Dexter are not only able to secure competitive employment, they are able to build fulfilling lives with independence, purpose, and dignity.
And that is why this work matters every single day.
